I am new to B&R APC’s and am having trouble getting connected to the PC. I created a offline installation file on a USB drive and plugged it into the unit. Nothing seemed to change on the PC even after a power cycle or reboot. I have also tried to browse for the PC in the online settings to connect via EthernetIP with no such luck. I have not been able to find anymore resources in the Automation Help tab to find what I am missing. Can someone point me in a few directions? Thank you!
Hi Kyzer,
If the PC is brand new, it probably doesn’t have Automation Runtime installed. There are two ways to get it installed. Let me know if you’re planning to use Hypervisor (Automation Runtime in addition to Windows/Linux) as that will change the instructions slightly.
One other note - before you install the project, make sure you have an IP address set in the Ethernet settings and/or activate SNMP. This will allow you to browse for and connect to the PC once the project is installed.
USB Install
You’ll need a USB stick (which you already have), a monitor, and a keyboard.
- Create a USB Install Drive from Automation Studio (Project → Project Installation → Create USB Install Drive). This will create a USB stick that the PC can boot from. This will probably wipe your USB stick, so make sure there isn’t anything important on there.
- Plug the USB stick into the PC while it is powered off
- Power on the PC and watch for the BIOS screen
- Press F2 on your keyboard to get to the BIOS setup menu. The specific key will vary depending on the APC model, but it is F2 for an APC2100
- Select the USB stick as the boot device
- Follow the instructions on the screen
CFast Install
For this, you’ll need a CFast card reader that can plug into your development PC. Note that this will completely wipe the CFast card, so you should not do this if you’re planning to install Automation Runtime as a Hypervisor solution.
- Make sure the APC is off and remove the CFast card
- Plug the CFast reader into your development PC and insert the CFast card
- In Automation Studio, go to Project → Project Installation → Offline Installation
- Follow the instructions to install the project to the CFast card
- Install the CFast card into the APC and turn it on
- The PC will boot and the project will install
Thank you for the help, Marcus. Unfortunately, APC I have does not have the monitor port option so I will resort to buying a CFast card reader. I will update when successful, thanks again!
You’re welcome! Please keep us updated if you run into any issues once you have your reader.
