I’ve been asked a few times recently about the mapp Framework project – especially about its status and possible migration to Automation Studio 6.
This rainy Friday morning gave me the idea that maybe you can help us get a clearer picture of the real usage of this framework. Some of you may already use it, some have only heard about it, and for others it might be something completely new.
Please take a short survey (just 5–6 questions) and share your thoughts. Your feedback will help us understand if mapp Framework is useful today, if you’d like to see it in Automation Studio 6, and whether you would consider using it as a licensed product.
I watched the videos on the B&R You tube channel, and I’m a little bit nearer understanding what it is, but no real clue if it can replace our current solution
Just taking alarms as an example; I’m not sure I could fully describe our current solution, as it was developed more than a decade ago and continues to serve us well
Some features we already have:
Multiple local displays
Remote display(s)
Logging
Can send to another PLC to be aggregated with its alarms - useful if the PLC has a sub PLC to handle some high speed task
Can send to SCADA as text with location data
Can select a message in the list and request call stack for the function that generated the message, even if the alarm does not belong to this PLC - this “How did you get into this mess?” command is very useful for debugging, especially if code is written in state machines. The call stack is displayed in English, time and date stamped - the only part that doesn’t support a second language
I’m not sure that using MAPP for alarms is there yet for us
mapp Framework is a framework built above mappServices, mappView, etc. Just to make the life of developers easier during new project creation or project maintenance. So if mappServices is not for you, e.g., mpAlarmX does not fit your way/architecture of developing projects, then mapp Framework will also not help you.
Update to others:
mapp Framework is an application project, developed by B&R application engineers
I contacted them and took the project manager role for this framework (a.i.)
We will handle it as a B&R Community project, so anyone who would like to help, can help (testing, development, etc.)
Our target is to finish migration to AS6 and provide you with a new version using the br-community GitHub
After that, I will promote it and check together with you if this project is needed.
