VC4, no Japanese characters

Hello,

I have a problem with Japanese characters in VC4

In Automation Studio AS4.1 project containing Japanese characters.

The Japanese characters display correctly within Automation Studio, VC4 - both in text lists and error messages.

However, after the transfer, only rectangles appear on the display.
AS4.1.16.135
AR O4.10
VC4 4.16.3

I use the font “PMingLiU”.

Can anyone help me with this?

Hi,

It’s a long time ago when I worked with VC4 (or even with AutomationStudio on a regular basis).
But I can remember, that a font has also to be installed into the PLC to use it… seeing it in Automation Studio just means that the font is available in Windows.
I can’t remember how to setup in detail, but there was some “font configuration table” in VC4 where you have to setup the used fonts also for use in the runtime environment…

And one more thing:
many fonts have special licenses dedicated to “just free when using in Windows” for example.
So even if it works technically, using different TTF fonts in Automation Runtime could lead to a license violation if the font license has some restrictions regarding commercial use, is dedicated to operating systems, a.s.o.

Even if I can’t point directly to where to configure, I hope this information helps a bit.

Hello Alexander,

as far as I can see, the font PmingLiu is installed. Why it’s named “mingliub.br,” I don’t know.

Unfortunately, only squares are still displayed. Does anyone use Japanese characters in VC4?

Hi,

I personally have never worked with Japanese texts.

Google search says that “PMingLiu” is a fontset for traditional chinese characters, so I’m not sure if japanese characters are inside this font? It also says that Windows uses “MS Mincho” for Japanese language pack, and both fonts seem to be licensed just for use with Windows.
But sure, I’m not aware how “good” or “bad” these infos are… looking for fonts with permissive licenses, the search points to fonts.google.com, for Japanese for example to “Noto Sans”.

But I haven’t checked the license policies, downloads, and so on, all infos are just out of a quick Google research.

Hi Alexander,

PMingLiU was used in the previous AS2.7 project.

After switching the font to Yu Gothic it works!
