How to upgrade linux on a hypervisor setup

With the coming cyber security laws its becoming more important to always have an installation updated. So what is the best approach to upgrade the GPOS (Linux) of an running Hypervisor installation. For instance going from B&R Linux 10 to B&R Linux 12 or perhaps even to standard Debian 13 (currently latest released version). I have tried to use the apt-update and upgrade, using the new dist in sources.list. But that did not fully upgrade the kernels, (and still left quite some cyber security warnings) and when trying to force the kernel upgrade it messed up hypervisor boot part.

I’m not a Linux expert, and combining it with a hypervisor makes things more complicated. But I remember from the past that it is recommended to use ONLY Linux (Debian) released by B&R with a hypervisor. I think the latest one released is Linux 12. I think if you want to update from Linux 10 to Linux 12, you have to do a new installation and install the hypervisor again. The cybersecurity hardening question may be better addressed by keeping pace with B&R Linux 12 releases, which is Debian 12 based and actively maintained.

Can anyone else from Community confirm my thinking??

The latest version is Linux 12, and to upgrade it, as Jaroslav mentioned, you need to reinstall everything including the Hypervisor, and the Linux.

To obtain the Linux 12 B&R, if you can’t find it on B&R download page even after you have logged in, i think you need to contact your local B&R office, since I believe there is license involved

To install the Linux, I think the easiest way is probably using B&R Live Utils: B&R Live Utils | B&R Industrial Automation

here it’s manual :B&R Live Utils User’s manual | B&R Industrial Automation
