Power Panel PP21

Hello, I would appreciate any help with the following: I have two PP21 4P0420.00-490 Power Panels B&R, which control processes on two identical machines. However, the program stored in the flash memory of one of them was erased by a voltage spike. The project files are unavailable as it was programmed a long time ago.

The only way to recover the program from the PP21 with the erased program is to copy it from the other, still-functioning PP21.

I have tried to find a procedure to transfer the program from one PP21 to the other using Automation Studio 2.7 + PVI Transfer Tool, but it has not been possible.

It is not necessary to modify the project; I simply need to copy the program exactly from one panel to the other.

Thank you for any guidance you can provide.

Hello Alfredo,
Kindly peruse this documentation.

Hi @aroldan, Stephan provided you with documentation on how to do that. You can also try to contact the local B&R office; maybe someone can come and do this service activity for you.

Hello Stephan,

Hello Jaroslav,

Thank you very much for your valuable help. Unfortunately, we don’t have a local B&R office in Colombia.

I reviewed the procedure you sent; however, when I run it, the PC doesn’t connect to the B&R PP21 Power Panel.

I’ve used PVI Transfer Tool with Automation Studio 2.7 and also Runtime Utility Center with Automation Studio 3. However, with both options, I get the same result:

PVI Error # 4808 No connection available to the PLC

PROCESS ABORTED

The RS232 cable and the PC’s COM port are ruled out as the problem, since I can receive data using PuTTY or Tera Term.

It was also possible to transfer the OS using Transfer AR in BTL mode to the PP21 with the memory erased. Bootstraploader C3.7 is active.

The problem is that PVI Transfer Tool or Runtime does not connect to either the programmed PP21 or the erased PP21 that we want to program.

According to the user manual, we programmed the Operating Mode Switch on the PP21 using SW0 and SW1, setting them to 00, FE, and 01, respectively, as per the Switch settings table in the manual.

However, we were unable to establish a connection between the PC and the PP21 in any of these settings. We believe the PP21 may need to be put into transfer mode through some action on the panel itself, but we don’t know how.

Could you please tell us what additional steps we need to take to successfully connect the PP21?

Thank you again for your help!

Is there anyone in the Community who remembers this old stuff?

Hi,

there’s no special transfer mode in PP21.
Normally, a transfer shoud be possible with every node switch setting between 01 - FE (FF is reserved for Diagnosis mode where no transfer is possible, 00 is reserved for dedicated transfer of AR in BTL mode).

I’m really wondering about the wmpty PP21, where you wrote that AR transfer in BTL mode was possible → I agree that this would mean that the cable is ok.
But if only AR was transferred and nothing more, no special setting on the RS232 interface should be active. That means, an online connection should be possible with the default settings of 57600 Baud, parity Even, 8 Databits, 1 Stopbit with node number switch setting 01.

On the PP21 including a program, the setting of the RS232 interface can be different or even disabled, that depends on the project setup used inside the panels software project and cannot be influenced or changed.

So, unfortunately it’s hard to say what to try next.
Some time ago, I created a post with a small RUC script that should support determining the RS232 settings.
Please have a look here, maybe it helps:

Best regards!

So @aroldan, has Alex’s answer helped you move forward?
