81MP vs. 80MP – Key Differences and Compatibility

The 81MP series replaces and consolidates large parts of the former 80MP stepper motor portfolio, with a strong focus on standardization and robustness.

Portfolio and Mechanics

  • No NEMA 23 (code ā€œDā€) variants in the 81MP portfolio
    → The series focuses on NEMA 24 (F) and NEMA 34 (H).
  • IP65 protection as standard for all 81MP motors
→ This level of protection was not standard across the entire 80MP portfolio.

Feedback and Functionality

  • Higher encoder resolution in encoder-equipped variants
→ Incremental encoder with 4096 steps.
  • No brake option available for 81MP motors
→ Applications requiring a holding brake must consider alternative solutions.

System Compatibility

  • 80MP stepper motors without encoder can also be used with ACOPOS X2
→ This supports reuse of existing hardware and smooth migration.

Possible Transition: 80MP → 81MP

The table below provides a high-level transition overview from the 80MP to the 81MP series. It is intended as orientation guidance, not as a guaranteed one-to-one replacement. Final selection must always be verified against application requirements.

80MP series Possible 81MP successor
80MPD1 81MPF1
80MPD3 81MPF5
80MPD5 81MPF5
80MPF1 81MPF1
80MPF3 81MPF5
80MPF5 81MPF5
80MPH4 81MPH4
80MPH6 81MPH6

Important Notes

  • Torque, current, and length may differ between series.
  • Encoder availability and resolution differ.
  • Brake functionality from 80MP is not available in the 81MP series.

Summary

With the 81MP stepper motor series, B&R delivers a clean, consistent, and future-proof stepper motor portfolio for ACOPOS X2. Standardized frame sizes, IP65 protection, M12 connectivity, and improved encoder feedback simplify system design while ensuring reliable performance across a wide range of applications.

The structured transition from 80MP to 81MP supports both new machine designs and gradual migration, while maintaining compatibility where required.

Most of motors will be available from Feb. 2026
