Welcome back to another addition of “What’s in the box?”
General Overview
The goal of these posts are to share photographs of unboxing B&R hardware to help spread the knowledge about B&R packaging for particular items. You may be asking “Why post this?” We have found at times that customers fear they might be missing something, or are unsure as to what certain items are when they open the “box” for the first time. Without prior knowledge on what all comes with the hardware when shipped, it can be a challenge without having a reference. That’s where the “What’s in the Box?” idea came to fruition. To share the experience, and knowledge on what are included in the boxes and descriptions/information about these items.

Today we will be doing an unboxing for the Power Panel C650. The latest addition to B&R’s Power Panel portfolio.
Similar to how the Automation PCs were packaged, the item is wrapped tight within the package, eliminating any movement during shipping.
While taking these photos I had not realized that I had opened the box upside down. If you’re like me, and may have opened the box like such, don’t worry the internal carboard is wrapped with saran plastic, so pulling the internals out of the box won’t cause the C650 to fall out. You can see that I had to flip over this section in order to gain access to the hardware.
Notice the sides of the cardboard, as handles are available to easily slide out this section from its original container.
Removing the bubble wrap and accessory bag, you can see how well wrapped the power panel is.
Flipping over the Power Panel C650, we can see the reset button along with the material and serial number giving us further information on the hardware.
I do want to bring the attention to the 5 hex key screws. While they look enticing to remove and open up the C650, DO NOT remove the screws.
The metal plate that is screwed onto the Power Panel C650 acts as a heat sink. Notice the indent where the LEDs are located on the back of the Power Panel C650.
that indent is designed to make contact with the thermal pad. Allowing heat to be dissipated from the CPU. You wouldn’t want to damage the thermal pad now would you? In the user manual, there a screenshot of the internals, that can help give you an idea of what I’m talking about. A highlights the pink thermal pad placed above the CPU.
One unique feature that is new to the Power Panels is the addition of three front LEDs. These three LEDs can be operated by the user application via I/O data points. Each color can be individually controlled with brightness (0-100% in 1% increments) and blinking pattern (each bit represents 1/8 of a second). For more information refer to the Power Panel C650 user manual. Its tough to capture a photo of them, as they are well hidden at first glance, unless lit up. You can see in the user manual where they would be located.
Moving on, lets take a look at the accessory bag. The accessory bag that is included with the C650. With the Power Panel C650 comes 4 mounting clips, and Terminal block connectors for the I/O and Power connections. All of which are homed inside the B&R orange accessory bag which is included with the Power Panel C650. (one of our colleagues got a little excited and ripped open the bag before I could take a photo of it. You should not see a rip in the bag for C650 like the one seen below)
I’m looking forward to seeing what creative ideas everyone may have while utilizing the C650, as the Power Panel C650 packs quite the punch compared to some of our older power panels.
