AS single licence under VirtualBOX VM

I have new PC with Windows 11 but I have to manage projects made in various 4.x versions therefore I installed virtual machine with Windows 7. Problem I have now that my single licence 1TGSWAS.SNG.00-001 does not work on virtual machine. Works fine on real machine. I checked related posts but can’t find answer there. Can this licence be used in virtual machine? I noticed in real PC Device Manager that WIBU dongle is attached as disk drive. I don’t know how to setup my VM to be able to reach this dongle. Because as soon as I start VM, Codemeter is detached from my real computer and is not available in VM, so I can’t use it as a disk drive. If I set the Codemeter as USB device, then I see message that driver is not installed. I installed Codemeter from WIBU webapge but it is still not OK…

Hi,

When you have installed Automation Studio on the VM, Codemeter should be installed during AS installation.
The first time you openned Automation Studio did the popup for licence appears?

Did the VM you are using already have an active licence when you installed it on the new PC?

I installed AS (version 4.2) on fresh, empty VM with Windows 7 OS. After first start of AS there was pop-up where I could choose between legacy or up-to-date licensing system. I tried both. Today I was checking if normal data USB stick is recognized in VM and this was OK, so I think VM is set up correctly. Only in device manager at the USB controllers, CodeMeter is displayed as unknown device . I’ve checked also at WIBU Systems (CodeMeter manufacturer) at their FAQ/CodeMeter/Virtualization page and there is written that WIBU can not guarantee simple pass-through on VMs.. They suggest a solution with client-server setup ( Virtualization - Frequently Asked Questions - Wibu-Systems ). It seems quite complicated as windows change installation should be performed. Probably for real machine, at least I understand that sentence so..

Is there any other solution (other than VM) how to manage old AS version projects on Windows 11 platform?

I’ve use AS4.2 on Windows 10 VM without any problem, only when the VM used already has licence active and you add it to a new PC, you had to close the Codemeter service delete files/folders in “C:/ProgramData/Codemeter/CmAct“ then restart service and reopen AS for enter the licence key (B&R Online Help).

The version that is installed with 4.2 creates this known exception.

If you install a newer Technogolgy guarding variant this exception is solved. In the provided link you can find allot of versions. You could try the latest or somewhere in between.

I am still struggling with this.. I’ve tried with new TG installation, the latest which should work with Windows7. Or I am stopped when I must enter licence key numbers or I get exception message that CodeMeter service is not running. I presume that I should not enter licence key in VM since I have valid licence stored at the CodeMeter dongle which is working well in AS 4.12, which I have installed on my host computer… Licence key I have to get from B&R authorisation center and I will have to pay for one licence in addition?

Hi, I manage many AS version in different service_pack deploy (2.0,2.7,4.0,4.2,4.5,4.9) and only AS 4.5 and 4.9 have to be licensed.
VM Win_Xp for AS: 2.0,2.5,2.7.
VM Win7 for AS: 4.0, 4.2, 4.3.,4.5
VM Win10 for AS: 4.5, 4.9.
The license for the hardware is on the plc.

The VM network is NAT or bridged mode configuration?

My VM network is bridged.

How I explain above AS4.2 not need to be licensed.
AS must be licensed from AS4.5 and newer.

But I can’t run it in VM environment. At start it asks for licence code.

I just start my win7 VM with AS4.3. CodeMeter color is gray and no container
for AS license. AS → Help → About → AS Site License (Legacy)
No limited duration
.
I open AS and no a AS project: no key license request.
