Hardware Compatibility Issue – COMAU APC820 (5PC820.SX01-K01 / 5PC800.BM45-01) in Automation Studio 4

Dear B&R Support Team,

I am currently working on configuring a B&R APC820 industrial PC that was originally installed as part of a COMAU robotic system.

The hardware identification is as follows:

  • Physical hardware nameplate: 5PC820.SX01-K01

  • CPU detected when connecting online: 5PC800.BM45-01

  • Software: B&R Automation Studio V4.12

Problem Description:

When I connect online to the APC820 through Automation Studio, the system identifies the CPU as 5PC800.BM45-01.

However, when I try to create or configure the same hardware in Automation Studio 4, I encounter the following issues:

  1. I can select the 5PC820.SX01-01 system unit, but the hardware catalog does not allow me to select 5PC800.BM45-01 as its CPU. Only other CPU models are available.

  2. When I select a different CPU model for the 5PC820.SX01-01, I encounter a hardware mismatch error when connecting to the actual APC820.

  3. When I upload the configuration from the controller, Automation Studio identifies 5PC800.BM45-01, but I cannot add or connect the required hardware modules to complete the physical configuration.

  4. I also encountered a connector compatibility error when attempting to connect the uploaded CPU and the 5PC820.SX01-01 system unit.

My Questions:

  1. Is the 5PC800.BM45-01 CPU compatible with the 5PC820.SX01-01 system unit in Automation Studio 4?

  2. Does the COMAU-specific 5PC820.SX01-K01 require a special hardware upgrade or OEM hardware definition?

  3. How can I correctly configure this combination in Automation Studio 4 without receiving a hardware mismatch error?

  4. Is there a specific hardware upgrade package or configuration procedure that supports this CPU and system unit?

  5. Is it possible to fully recover the original hardware configuration from the APC820 and reuse it in a new Automation Studio project?|

I would appreciate your guidance on the correct hardware configuration and any required hardware upgrade files to resolve this issue.

Thank you for your support.

Best regards.

Hi,

As Automation Studio does not allow to connect the 5PC800.BM45-01 to a 5PC820.SX01-01, it seems not to be compatible (I checked it with my Automation Studio installation and I can confirm that the processor board BM45 is available in the hardware catalogue, but cannot be connected to the standard base unit 5PC820.SX01-01)

Yes. The -K in the order code (5PC820.SX01-K01) means, that this is a special customized unit which is just available for the customer it was build for.
This is also the reason why Automation Studio signals a hardware mismatch when trying to use the standard module without “-K” in the order code → these are different hardware devices, and it would still not work even if it were possible to connect a GM45-1 to the standard system unit.

Unfortunately, this is not possible as long as you don’t have the customized hardware upgrade installation packages for Automation Studio for this kind of hardware.
This package it exclusively available for the origin customer of the 5PC820.SX01-K01. B&R is not able and not allowed by contract to share such customized packages.

I’m personally not aware of who’s the origin customer → could be Comau, could be the OEM of the machine… I think you should try first to contact the OEM if he knows more about and is able and allowed to share the needed hardware upgrades.

Best regards!
