Multi-core Functionality

Dear Community,

Hello. I’m writing to the community because I’m curious about the multi-core functionality in Automation Studio 6. The help documentation is a bit lacking, so I have a few questions:

  1. For hypervisors, when multi-core settings are enabled, is multi-core configuration possible?
  2. When multi-core settings are enabled, do features like Mapp View or other functions improve?
  3. Does the functionality improve only on PLCs like the X20CP0410 without Powerlink?
  4. In version 6.2, when testing with and without multi-core settings, there was no difference in CPU load in SDM. Is there a separate way to verify this difference?

Thank you in advance for your response.

Hello,

Multi-core configuration is not yet supported when using hypervisor. The feature is under development and will come available in a later version of Automation Runtime.

Depending on multi-core settings it is possible to move the workload to multiple cores, which should improve the performance.

X20CP0410 does not have multiple cores, so the setting has no effect. (If configured for multi-core on a single-core target system only a single core is used).

SDM and/or Profiler can be used to determine the effect. Which PLC did you use to test it? If it only has one core there is no difference to see.

Tommi Piiparinen,

Thank you for your response.

Hardware : X20CP0484

I have a few questions.

Currently, I am using VC4 HMI for testing purposes, and the motion is set up with a 2-axis SDC configuration. In this case, when I enable or disable multicore, there is no change in the usage of Core 0 and Core 1. Are there any additional settings that need to be configured?

The X20CP0410 is a dual core cpu and also benefits from the multicore functionality.

Ah… My bad on the number of cores, thanks for correcting Corne!
