We have many production systems here with IPC 5P81, almost all of them have the RAID controller RAIC-05 or -06 installed.
Recently I saw on a system that a RAID was invalid. A hard drive was reported as “dropped”.
Our IT department does not feel responsible for this, the IPC must always be sent to the machine manufacturer.
I therefore tried to restore the RAID myself, unfortunately without success.
My approach:
1. Removed the defective hard drive and replaced it with another one
2. format the newly inserted hard drive using the RAID controller (low level format)
3. Rebuild Mirrored Set (offline)
After that, both HDD’s were listed as “Current” in one mirrored set. But when restarting the IPC, no Operating System was found. RAID was first place in the BIOS Boot order.
What did i do wrong ?
I performed the procedure twice, once at the machine, the second time in our workshop on a replacement IPC. Both times with the same result. Is it even possible to restore the RAID, if so, how should I proceed?
Please see pictures below, after rebuild and BIOS Settings.
Not sure how many RAID expert we have here. But lets start with hw identification. IPC 5P81 means Automation PC 810? Can you share with us complete model number?
Thanks for the confirmation. So it is this documentation: https://www.br-automation.com/en/products/5pc800b945-11/ — there is a chapter dedicated to it: 7.5 Rebuild mirrored set, but nothing special there. Just info for others — maybe someone in the Community has experience with this?
For my curiosity, are you sure that the remaining disk still contained a valid OS and boot structure? If not, then you would probably need to reinstall the system anyway.
The invalid RAID system only worked with one hard drive for a long period of time. I only saw the invalid RAID by chance when I restarted the computer.
During the second attempt in our workshop, I removed a hard drive and installed it via the SATA HDD slot.
It was recognized there and could be booted from there.
(However, I had to initialize the HDD in another Windows computer (MBR or UEFI).
After that, it is not working with the RAID anymore, you have to format it again.
